Frequently Asked Questions

The Essentials

Understanding Our Diamonds

Are lab-grown diamonds "real" diamonds?

Yes, 100%. Without exception. Lab-grown diamonds are pure crystallized carbon, physically, chemically, and optically identical to mined diamonds. They possess the exact same fire, scintillation, and hardness (10 on the Mohs scale). The only difference is their origin: think of it as "ice from a state-of-the-art freezer" versus "ice from a frozen lake."

What is the difference between a lab-grown diamond and a mined diamond?

The only real difference is where the diamond formed. Both are identical carbon crystals with identical hardness, brilliance, and chemistry, and even a jeweller cannot tell them apart by eye. A mined diamond formed underground over millions of years, while a lab-grown diamond is created in a matter of weeks in a controlled laboratory that reproduces the same heat and pressure. Because the lab route skips mining, the same size and quality typically costs far less.

Lab-grown diamond vs moissanite vs cubic zirconia: what is the difference?

A lab-grown diamond is a genuine diamond, while moissanite and cubic zirconia are not diamonds at all. Moissanite is a different mineral (silicon carbide) that is slightly softer and throws more rainbow flashes, and cubic zirconia is a soft, glass-like simulant that clouds and scratches over time. On the Mohs hardness scale, diamond is 10, moissanite is about 9.25, and cubic zirconia is around 8. Everything Carat Club Co. sells is a real lab-grown diamond, never a simulant.

Will a jeweler or a diamond tester know the difference?

A standard diamond tester will identify them as diamonds because they are. Even an experienced jeweler cannot tell the difference with the naked eye or a loupe. Differentiation requires highly specialized laboratory equipment used by institutions like IGI or GIA.

Do lab-grown diamonds cloud or change color over time?

Never. Because they are genuine diamonds, they are structurally stable. Unlike simulants like Moissanite or Cubic Zirconia (CZ), which can become cloudy or scratched over time, a Carat Club Co. diamond will retain its brilliance and clarity forever.

Are lab-grown diamonds more ethical and sustainable than mined diamonds?

For most buyers, yes. A lab-grown diamond involves no mining, so there is no land disruption and no exposure to the conflict-diamond supply chains that mined stones can carry. It is the same diamond with a cleaner, fully traceable origin, which is a large part of why we built Carat Club Co. on lab-grown stones.

Quality & Certification

Are your diamonds certified?

Here is exactly how it works. Stones of 0.5ct and above in our certified lines carry individual IGI (International Gemological Institute) certificates with laser-inscribed serial numbers you can verify in IGI's public database. Stones below 0.5ct ship without individual certificates, because independent grading would cost more than the stone itself; where certification is optional (for example, tennis bracelets at HK$350 per stone), we say so on the product page. If a product page does not say IGI-certified, the stone is not certified. Learn more about how certification labs compare and the bracelet certificate standard.

How do I verify my IGI certificate?

You verify it yourself in under a minute. For any certified stone, take the report number laser-inscribed on the diamond and printed on the certificate, enter it into the IGI report-verification tool at igi.org, and confirm the grades match your certificate. This is an independent check that does not rely on us, which is the whole point of third-party certification.

What color and clarity are your diamonds?

We select high-color, high-clarity lab-grown diamonds and focus on the grades that matter most to how a stone looks in daily wear. For every IGI-certified stone, the exact color and clarity grades are printed on its certificate, so you are never taking our word for it. The precise specification for each piece is listed on its product page.

What cut grades do you offer?

We believe the "Cut" is the most important of the 4Cs. We focus exclusively on Ideal and Excellent proportions to maximize light reflection. We never compromise on cut quality to simply preserve carat weight.

What metals do you use? Are they solid gold?

It depends on the style, and every option is listed on the product page. Across the range we offer sterling silver (S925), solid 9K and 18K gold, and PT950 platinum, so you can choose the metal that suits your budget and skin.

Buying Fine Jewellery Online

Is it safe to buy diamonds and fine jewellery online?

Yes, when the seller is transparent and the stones are independently certified, which is how we operate. Your certified diamond comes with an IGI certificate you can verify yourself, every piece passes final quality control in Hong Kong before it ships, and every order travels fully insured. Buying online is also how we keep prices honest, because we skip the Central showroom rent that traditional jewellers build into their tags.

How can I trust the quality if I cannot see the piece in person first?

Three things stand in for seeing it on a counter. First, independent proof: certified stones come with an IGI certificate carrying grades you verify yourself. Second, our own final quality-control check in Hong Kong on every piece before dispatch. Third, the Carat Club Co. Guarantee, which backs the piece with a one-year free repair promise and a defect exchange. If anything about your piece is unclear before you order, message us and we will send the specifics.

Is my payment secure, and what payment methods do you accept?

Yes. Checkout runs on Shopify's secure, PCI-compliant payment system, so your card details are encrypted and never handled by us directly. We accept all major credit and debit cards, and you will see every available payment option at checkout.

How do I get the right size when buying online?

For studs and most earrings there is nothing to size, because they simply fit. For a tennis bracelet, use the printable A4 size guide on the product page to measure your wrist at home, and choose a fit that drapes about 1cm to 1.5cm larger than your wrist. Ear cuffs are designed to slip on without a piercing and adjust to your ear.

Pricing & Value

Why are your prices significantly lower than traditional jewelers?

We operate on a "Smart Luxury" model. By bypassing traditional mining cartels, eliminating expensive storefront rents in Central, and removing multi-layered middlemen, we bring direct-to-lab economics to you. You are paying for the diamond and the craftsmanship, not the brand's marketing campaign.

Is a lab-grown diamond a good investment?

We believe jewellery should be an investment in your identity and daily joy, not a speculative financial asset. While mined diamonds are often marketed as "investments," they rarely retain their full retail value upon resale. By choosing lab-grown, you save significantly upfront, allowing your capital to remain in your actual investment portfolio.

What is your return policy?

To maintain our disruptive pricing, all sales are final: we do not offer change-of-mind returns or refunds. What we do offer is confidence in the piece itself. Every order passes quality control in Hong Kong before dispatch, manufacturing defects reported within 7 days of delivery are exchanged for the same product, and every piece is covered by our one-year free repair guarantee.

Why don't you offer returns?

Free returns were never free. About one online order in five comes back, and processing a single return costs roughly 27% of the item's price once shipping both ways, inspection and restocking are counted. Multiply those and returns consume around 5% of revenue, quietly priced into every item on the shelf. Nobody absorbs that: decisive customers pay it on behalf of indecisive ones. At Carat Club Co. we would rather not charge you for it. Note: if you specifically require a return or refund option and are willing to pay the associated premium, please contact us for a bespoke quote.

Shipping & Delivery

What is the delivery timeline for my order?

Because every piece is made-to-order, please allow 2 to 3 weeks from order to dispatch. We don't believe in mass-produced inventory sitting in a warehouse. Each diamond is hand-selected and each setting is crafted specifically for you upon purchase, ensuring a level of precision that matches our standards.

Why is my jewellery "Made-to-Order"?

This is a core pillar of our honest pricing. By producing only what is ordered, we eliminate the massive costs of carrying unsold stock and expensive inventory insurance. We pass these savings directly to you, allowing us to offer the best prices in Hong Kong.

Which countries do you ship to?

We ship to Hong Kong and 14 markets across Asia: Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. We do not currently ship to the United States, the United Kingdom, or the EU.

How much does shipping cost, and is my order insured?

Every order ships fully insured from our hands to your door. Within Hong Kong, delivery is free and arrives next day by SF Express after dispatch. For our other Asian markets, shipping is free on orders over HK$9,000 and a flat HK$450 otherwise.

Will I have to pay customs or import duties?

Possibly, if you are outside Hong Kong. Overseas orders ship on a delivered-duty-unpaid basis, which means any local import duties or taxes charged by your country's customs are the recipient's responsibility. Within Hong Kong there are no such charges.

How do I know my size for a Tennis Bracelet?

We recommend a fit that drapes slightly, usually 1cm to 1.5cm larger than your actual wrist size. You can download our Printable A4 Size Guide on the product page to measure accurately at home.

Do you have a physical showroom?

To maintain our "Best Price in HK" guarantee, we operate as a 100% online experience. This allows us to cut the overhead costs that traditional jewelers pass on to customers.

The Carat Club Co. Guarantee

What does the Carat Club Co. Guarantee cover?

The guarantee backs every piece in three ways. Every order passes final quality control in Hong Kong before it ships. Any manufacturing defect reported within 7 days of delivery, with photos, is exchanged for the same product. And every piece carries one year of complimentary repair for issues under normal wear, such as a loosened stone, a clasp or fitting problem, or plating wear.

What happens if a stone comes loose or a clasp needs repair?

Contact us and we will repair it free within the first year. The one-year Carat Club Co. Guarantee covers normal-wear issues like a loosened stone, a clasp or fitting that needs attention, or plating wear. Just message us with a photo and we will arrange the repair.

Care & Maintenance

How should I clean my jewellery?

You can clean your diamonds with mild dish soap, warm water, and a soft-bristled toothbrush. This removes the natural oils and lotions that can dull the surface sparkle.

Can I wear my tennis bracelet to the gym or in the shower?

While our diamonds are indestructible (Mohs 10), we recommend removing jewellery during heavy workouts or in environments with harsh chemicals (like chlorine pools) to protect the integrity of the metal setting and keep the platinum plating looking pristine.

Can my jewellery be serviced or re-plated after the first year?

Yes, get in touch and we will help. Beyond the one-year guarantee period, we can advise on cleaning, re-plating, and repairs to keep your piece looking its best.
