What does platinum actually cost against 18K White Gold?

The reason is unglamorous. A stud is a tiny piece of jewellery. Two settings and two posts use a few grams of metal between them, and the diamonds carry most of the cost. Once the stone is doing the heavy lifting, the difference between two premium metals stops being large enough to charge for. Where the ladder does move is underneath.

Why does metal matter more on a stud than on a chain or a ring?
Because a stud is the only thing you own that goes through you. The post sits inside a piercing for twelve hours or more a day, against tissue, in contact with sweat. Three things follow.
Contact
White gold is an alloy, and it is usually finished with rhodium plating over a base that can contain nickel. Nickel is the most common cause of red, itchy lobes, and it explains why a man can wear a white gold watch and a white gold chain without trouble and still react to an earring. PT950 is 95% platinum with no plating layer to wear through. Wear, not loss
Both metals scratch. They lose the scratch differently. When platinum is scratched the metal is displaced rather than shed, so a platinum stud gains a soft patina and keeps its weight. Rhodium-plated white gold eventually needs replating, which means a trip to a jeweller and a small recurring cost. That is routine maintenance, not a fault, and plenty of men wear 18K White Gold for decades without minding it. It is simply a task you will repeat, and platinum is one you will not.
Colour
PT950 is white by nature. 18K White Gold is a yellow-toned alloy made white at the surface. As the plating thins the warm tone returns, and it shows first at the prong tips, which is exactly where the light lands next to a colourless stone.

A plated S925 single at HK$1,599 is a sensible way to find out whether you actually wear an earring before committing. Be clear about what plating is. It wears, sooner if you sleep or train in them, and sterling silver tarnishes where platinum does not. Buy plated understanding that and it will serve you well. Buy plated expecting permanence and it will not.

Common questions about platinum studs for men
Is PT950 the same thing as 950 platinum?
Yes. PT950 means 950 parts per thousand platinum, or 95%, with the remaining 5% alloyed for hardness. Two ways of writing the same standard.
Will 18K White Gold turn yellow?
Not the metal, the surface. The alloy has a warm tone that rhodium plating covers, and as the plating wears the tone shows again, first at high-contact edges and prong tips. Replating restores it. How often depends on how much you wear the piece and on your skin chemistry, so nobody can give you an honest figure in years.
Should I buy one earring or a pair?
Both the Vanguard and the Essential are sold as a single or a pair, and the single is the more common men's purchase. If one ear is pierced, buy one. Buy the pair if you want a second ear covered or a spare against loss.
Which back holds better?
They are built for different risks. The Vanguard uses a butterfly back with a widened anti-sag base and a friction lock, which keeps a heavier men's stud sitting upright instead of tipping forward in the lobe. The Essential uses La Poussette locking backs, which click shut and need a deliberate squeeze to release.
