Let us begin with the fact that a lot of marketing is designed to obscure.
A lab-grown diamond is a diamond. Same carbon lattice, same hardness, same optical behaviour as a mined stone. Moissanite is silicon carbide. It is a completely different mineral with a different crystal structure, different hardness, and different optics. It is not a diamond, it was never a diamond, and no amount of "diamond alternative" phrasing changes the chemistry.
That is not a verdict. Moissanite is a legitimate, attractive, extremely durable stone and there are good reasons to buy one. But you should know which of the two you are buying, and a striking number of sellers would prefer you did not think about it too hard.
The optical difference, and why it is visible
The reason moissanite looks different has a number attached to it: dispersion. Dispersion measures how much a stone splits white light into spectral colours, and it is the source of what the trade calls fire.
A diamond has a dispersion of about 0.044. Moissanite is about 0.104, more than double. That is not a subtle gap. It means moissanite throws significantly more coloured light, and in bright or directional lighting it produces a vivid rainbow flash that diamond simply does not.
People describe it as a disco ball effect, and whether that is a compliment depends entirely on you. Some find it dazzling and want exactly that. Others find it reads as artificial, precisely because it out-sparkles the thing it is standing in for. The tell is not that moissanite looks worse. It is that it looks like more.
Moissanite is also doubly refractive: light entering it splits into two rays. At larger sizes, viewed closely from certain angles, this can produce a slight fuzziness in the facet edges. Diamond is singly refractive and its facet junctions stay crisp.
Hardness, which matters less than people claim
Diamond is 10 on the Mohs scale. Moissanite is about 9.25.
The Mohs scale is not linear, so diamond is meaningfully harder than that gap suggests. But be honest about the practical consequence: 9.25 is extremely hard. Moissanite is not going to scratch in normal wear. It will outlive you. Anyone using durability as the argument against moissanite is reaching.
Price, which is the actual argument
Moissanite costs a fraction of a lab-grown diamond, which itself costs a fraction of a mined one. That is the real trade, and it is a legitimate one.
What you are choosing between is not quality in the abstract. It is a stone that looks like a diamond and is cheap, against a stone that is a diamond and is more expensive. If the answer to "is it actually a diamond" does not matter to you, moissanite is a rational purchase and you should not feel talked down to for making it.
For many people, though, the answer does matter. Not for resale, because neither stone is an investment and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something. It matters because of what the object is. A lab-grown diamond means you never have to qualify the word. It is a diamond, in the same sense that a mined one is, and the only difference is where it grew.
How to spot the language designed to confuse you
The single most common trick in this category is vocabulary.
Watch for: "diamond simulant", "diamond alternative", "diamond hybrid", "faux diamond", "man-made diamond" used loosely, and the worst offender, "lab diamond" applied to something that is not a diamond at all. These phrases are engineered to sit close enough to the word diamond that a skim-reading buyer fills in the rest.
A seller with nothing to hide names the material. Lab-grown diamond. Moissanite. Cubic zirconia. If a product page will not tell you plainly which mineral you are buying, you already have your answer, and the answer is not the flattering one.
The clean test: ask whether the stone would be identified as a diamond by a gemmological lab. A lab-grown diamond would. Moissanite would not, and it takes a jeweller about two seconds with a standard tester to tell them apart, because their thermal and electrical conductivity are quite different.
So which should you buy?
Buy moissanite if the look is what you want, the budget is the binding constraint, and the identity of the material is genuinely not important to you. It is bright, it is tough, it is cheap, and there is nothing embarrassing about it.
Buy a lab-grown diamond if you want the restraint of actual diamond fire rather than a rainbow, if you want facet edges that stay crisp at size, and if you want to own a diamond without paying the mined premium or accepting the compromises that budget forces on a mined stone.
What you should not do is buy one while believing it is the other. That is the only genuinely bad outcome here, and it happens constantly, because a great deal of money depends on the confusion persisting.
Certification, said plainly
Independent certification is also where the two part company. Diamonds are graded by labs like IGI and GIA against published scales. At Carat Club Co., diamonds of 0.5ct and above are individually IGI-certified. Below 0.5ct, stones are not certified by default, because grading a small stone independently can cost more than the stone. Certification below the threshold is available on request, and the rule applies per stone rather than per piece.
A certificate is not just paperwork. It is a document from a lab with no stake in the sale, stating what the stone is. That is a thing you can check.
Real diamonds, priced honestly
The short version
Moissanite is silicon carbide, not diamond. It has more than double the dispersion, so it throws rainbows a diamond never would, and it can look slightly soft at the facet edges at larger sizes. It is very hard, very cheap, and perfectly legitimate. A lab-grown diamond is an actual diamond. Choose whichever you want, but insist that the seller tells you which one it is, because a great many of them are working quite hard not to.
