Let us settle the only question that matters first, because almost every article on this subject buries it.
A lab-grown diamond is a diamond. Not a simulant, not a fake, not "diamond-like". It is carbon arranged in the same crystal lattice, with the same hardness of 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index, the same thermal conductivity, the same fire and brilliance. A gemmologist cannot tell the difference by looking. Not with a loupe, not with a standard tester. They need specialist equipment that detects the tiny trace signatures of how it grew, and even then they are identifying the origin, not the substance.
Moissanite is a different material that looks a bit like a diamond. Cubic zirconia is a different material that looks a bit like a diamond. A lab-grown diamond is a diamond. Anyone blurring those three together is either confused or selling something.
So the real question is not whether it is real. It is what you are actually choosing between. Here are the five differences that survive scrutiny.
1. Price, and it is not close
This is the whole point, and pretending otherwise is coy. A lab-grown diamond typically costs a fraction of a mined stone with the same specification. The gap is large enough to change what you can actually own.
The practical consequence is not that you spend less. It is that at the same budget you move up. A budget that buys a small mined stone with compromises on cut and colour buys a considerably better lab-grown one with no compromises at all. Better cut, cleaner colour, bigger, or all three.
That is the trade, stated plainly. What you give up is not quality. It is scarcity.
2. Resale value, and the part nobody says out loud
The standard objection to lab-grown diamonds is that they hold no resale value. It is presented as the killer argument and it deserves a straight answer.
It is true that lab-grown diamonds have poor resale value. It is also true that mined diamonds have poor resale value, and this is the part the objection quietly omits. Walk into a jeweller with a mined diamond you bought retail last year and ask what they will give you for it. The number will shock you. Retail markup means you are usually looking at a substantial loss the moment you leave the shop, and the secondhand diamond market is thin, buyer-friendly, and unromantic.
Diamonds are not an investment asset. They never were. The idea that they hold value is one of the most successful pieces of marketing in commercial history, and it exists because it makes an expensive purchase feel prudent.
So the honest framing is this: if you are buying a diamond as a financial instrument, do not, in either category. If you are buying it to wear, then resale value is a consideration you were never really going to act on anyway. Buy the thing you want to look at.
3. Origin, and what you can actually know
A lab-grown diamond has a traceable origin. It was made in a specific facility by a specific process, and there is no ambiguity about the chain it travelled.
Mined diamonds have improved enormously on this front and the industry has done real work. But a mined stone passes through a long chain of hands, and the honest position is that certainty is harder to come by. If knowing exactly where your diamond came from matters to you, lab-grown gives you an answer that does not require you to trust a chain of custody.
On environmental impact, be sceptical of anyone claiming a clean win in either direction. Growing diamonds is energy-intensive, and the footprint depends heavily on the electricity supply of the facility that grew them. Mining moves an enormous amount of earth. Anyone giving you a confident, tidy number on either side is selling you a conclusion, not a measurement.
4. The 4Cs work exactly the same way
This trips people up. Because a lab-grown diamond is a diamond, it is graded on precisely the same scales, by the same independent labs, against the same standards. Cut, colour, clarity, carat. A VS1, G colour, Excellent cut lab-grown diamond means exactly what those words mean on a mined stone.
Lab-grown diamonds are not automatically flawless, either. They grow with inclusions, they vary in colour, and they can be cut well or badly. A poorly cut lab-grown diamond is a dull diamond, exactly as a poorly cut mined one is. The grading is not a formality and the cut still decides everything.
5. What other people think
This is a real factor and it is silly to pretend it is not.
Some people attach meaning to the geological history of the stone. The billion years underground, the improbability, the romance of it. That is not an irrational thing to value. Meaning is meaning, and if the story matters to you or to the person you are buying for, that is a legitimate reason to choose a mined stone and you should not be talked out of it.
What is not legitimate is being told the lab-grown one is fake, or that people will be able to tell. They will not. Nobody has ever identified a lab-grown diamond across a dinner table, and nobody ever will.
Certification, said plainly
At Carat Club Co., diamonds of 0.5ct and above are individually IGI-certified. Below 0.5ct, stones are not certified by default, because independent grading of a small stone can cost more than the stone itself. Certification below that threshold is available on request. The rule applies per stone, not per piece.
What the difference buys you
The short version
It is a real diamond. Nobody can tell, including gemmologists without specialist equipment. It costs a fraction of the mined equivalent, which means at any given budget you get a better stone. Neither type is an investment, and anyone using resale value as an argument against lab-grown is not applying that test to mined stones. The only genuine reason to prefer a mined diamond is that its history means something to you, and that is a perfectly good reason. Everything else is marketing.
